Pork and Beans Recipe for Baked Beans Lovers

Ingredients

  • 4 large cans baked beans (See Note to make your own beans or 1 pound navy beans (if you are making your own beans; otherwise use canned
  • 2 links sweet sausage
  • 8 slices bacon
  • 1 red yellow or orange bell pepper, diced very finely
  • 1 yellow onion diced very finely
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • dash nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon salt see notes
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  • If you are using your own beans, cook beans first.
  • Soak beans in cold water, allowing three inches of water on top.
  • Soak overnight.
  • Rinse. Cover with three inches of water and bring to boil. As soon as water boils, turn down to a steady simmer. Cook until beans are tender, about one hour.
  • In meantime cook sausage links and slice.
  • Cook bacon. The best way to make sure bacon doesn't shrivel is to oven bake
  • Salt beans, and put in baking dish.
  • In frying pan, saute diced bell pepper and onion, just until soft.
  • Add in ketchup, maple syrup, brown sugar and spices.
  • Cook for five minutes.
  • Add to beans. Put in sausage. Cover with bacon
  • Bake in oven at 350 degrees covered for 20 minutes. Uncover for last ten minutes.

Notes

These are sweet beans. You can add in some heat by adding in 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
